Top 5 Albums this Summer

Top 5 Albums this Summer
Here at Hatchet we aren't always outside exploring, and when we aren’t you can guarantee we will have some music playing. Whether it be on a road trip or here in the office, there is always something on in the background. This week we discussed our favourite summer albums, so in no particular order, here they are:

LEISURE - Self Titled - (Psych Rock/R&B/Funk/Soul…)

This is the first album from the kiwi band and it is jam packed with quality psych rock/ R&B/ funk tracks. This album ranges from upbeat bangers to laid-back jams and perfect for any time of the day. This album even got approval from some tough critics in the family in the over 50 range. I was at the album launch for this back in October at the Crystal Palace and it was going off. They performed all the tracks from the album and the 180gram vinyl sounds just as good. If you get a chance to see these guys this year do so, if not, buy/stream this album.

The XX - I see you (Indie pop/R&B)

Full album released this week! This is the 3rd album from the London trio which is faultless and could even rival their self titled 1st album. I have been thrashing the first single ‘On Hold’ all summer and can’t get enough of it. When that song comes on really turn it up.

NxWorries - Yes Lawd! (Pop/R&B)

This is an Anderson .Paak project with producer Knxwledge which has been getting plenty of play time on road trips this summer. Anderson .Paak dominated 2016 with Malibu, he played sold out shows throughout the world and put on an unforgettable show at Coachella. This album is packed with his versatile voice acting as an instrument and we love it here at Hatchet.

Frank Ocean - Blond (Pop/R&B/Rap)

Pitchfork rated this album 9/10 and we gave it a 10. This album is the follow up to Channel Orange and was 4 years in the making. It was well worth the wait. I even opened an Apple music account just to listen to the pre release and to be honest I haven't turned back since. Get your ears around this.

Fly My Pretties - Live at Bats (Folk/Soul/Roots)

This album gets better with age! We had tickets for the Coroglen show in early Jan so I made sure this album was in the mix this summer. Live at Bats was released in 2006 and recorded over 5 concerts by Barnaby Weir and an assortment of talented musicians. The live performance far exceeded my expectations and was a brilliant showcase of NZ music performed by pure passionate artists jamming together. Who knew Bag of Money referenced a baggie?
